First Detection of VLBI Signals across 8500 km Baseline between TNRT and Effelsberg Radio Telescopes

The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT: Public Organization), in collaboration with Max Planck Institute for Radio astronomy (MPIfR), has achieved the historic first detection of astronomical radio signals using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)¹ with the 40-m Thai National Radio Telescope (TNRT). The experiment, which was supported by the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope in Germany, marks the first ever VLBI signal detection made in Thailand.

Thai National Telescope (TNO) Makes Groundbreaking Discovery of Supernova Remnants

The National Astronomical Research Institute (Public Organization) (NARIT), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), has revealed that the Thai National Telescope (TNO) with a diameter of 2.4 meters, located at the National Observatory on Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, joined an international research team to observe the supernova remnants AT2022tsd. The team discovered an unprecedented post-explosion energetic flare occurring more than 100 days after the initial supernova explosion. Additionally, a short-duration energetic flare lasting only 30 seconds, the shortest ever observed with a telescope in this wavelength range of light, was identified. This research has been published in the journal Nature.

The 1st Call for Proposals of the 40-m Thai National Radio Telescope (Cycle 0: Resident Shared Risk Observing)

Thai National Radio Astronomy Observatory (TNRO) in National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT, Public Organization) are honored to now announce the 1st Call for Proposals (CfP) of the 40-m Thai National Radio Telescope (TNRT) as Cycle 0 in a Resident Shared Risk Observing (RSRO) style. TNRO locates at Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai, in the northern part of Thailand, and the 40-m TNRT is one of radio telescopes at this site as the largest radio telescope for radio astronomy in South-East Asia.

Earth microlensing zone: the Earth is well-hidden from other civilizations

For decades, we have been searching for intelligent life beyond Earth by pointing radio receivers and telescopes into the sky. The mere existence of the Earth, a rocky planet within the habitable zone of the Sun, could provide motivation for extra-terrestrial observers to send signals to or to listen for signals from the Earth. A team lead by Dr Supachai Awiphan from the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) in collaboration with researchers from Hokkaido University, the University of Manchester, Chiang Mai University and Observatory de Besancon suggested that the Earth is well-hidden and could be detected by other civilisations through photometric microlensing only 14.7 times a year.

The First Results from the KaVA Large Program for Star-formation Studies: Unveiling massive baby stars ejecting complex high velocity outflows

Summary : An international collaboration via Very long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) network KaVA (KVN and VERA Array) report the first observational results detailing complex outflow structures in a high-mass star-cluster forming region G25.82-0.17 by combining follow-up data from the international project, ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), as one of the KaVA large programs investigating star-formation under collaboration of the Mizusawa-VLBI Observatory of NAOJ (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan) with KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute). The results demonstrate that newly born high-mass stars in G25.82-0.17 were likely formed in a similar manner to Solar-type low-mass stars. The present study is the first step toward larger-scale EAVN (East-Asian VLBI Network), in which the 40-m Thai National Radio Telescope by National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) will be collaborating in the large program investigating star-formation in the near future.
