งานวิจัยวิทยาศาสตร์บรรยากาศ ดำเนินการศึกษาทั้งการสังเกตการณ์ทางดาราศาสตร์ การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศ และปัญหามลพิษทางอากาศ ในส่วนของการศึกษาบรรยากาศของโลก NARIT มุ่งเน้นวิจัยเกี่ยวกับผลกระทบของการเปลี่ยนแปลงบรรยากาศโลกต่อการสังเกตการณ์ทางด้านดาราศาสตร์ การเปลี่ยนแปลงของบรรยากาศชั้นล่างที่เป็นผลกระทบมาจากก๊าซเรือนกระจก มลพิษทางอากาศ อนุภาคฝุ่นละออง ละอองลอยอินทรีย์ทุติยภูมิ และการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางอุตุนิยมวิทยา ที่มีผลกระทบต่อสุขอนามัย เศรษฐกิจ และสังคมไทย
นอกจากนี้ ยังศึกษาวิจัยด้านสภาพอวกาศ (Space Weather) โดยมุ่งเน้นการเฝ้าสังเกตการณ์วัตถุใกล้โลกด้วยกล้องโทรทรรศน์ รวมถึงการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพอวกาศซึ่งมีผลกระทบต่อโลกของเรา เช่นรังสีคอสมิก ลมสุริยะและพายุสุริยะ
